Stop Payment Providers eating attribution credit

Why PayPal, Klarna and similar checkout referrers absorb attribution credit, and how to exclude them in Attribution Settings.

Written by Juan Garzon

Payment provider domains and similar referrers often appear as touchpoints after checkout redirects. In attribution, they can soak up credit that should stay with your marketing channels.

Why Payment Providers / Internal look huge

  • Shoppers leave to PayPal, Klarna, credit-card pages, or similar hosts, then return to your site.

  • Those hops can register as referrers or internal-like steps in the journey.

  • Without an exclude rule, Kickbite may give them attribution weight.

This is usually a settings problem, not broken tracking.

How to exclude them

Use Exclude channels / view conversions under Attribution Settings. Exclude Payment Providers and similar Internal or payment referrers so they no longer take credit.

What changes after the exclude

  • Attribution credit redistributes to the remaining eligible touchpoints.

  • Reporting reflects your current attribution settings — re-check the same date range after you change the setting.

  • Backend order totals in Trust Center do not change. You are changing credit allocation, not order ingest.

What does not change

  • Your shop order count

  • Ad platform click counts

  • The need for correct UTMs and kb= tags on real marketing channels
